Kathryn Kane, 100, of Brentwood, California, passed away peacefully at home on the afternoon of March 10, 2019. She was born March 3, 1919, in White Plains, New York, and raised on the family farm until the age of 14. Inspirited to become an actress from the start of her teenage years, she and her family relocated to New York City where she worked both as a professional model for the acclaimed John Powers Agency and a singer in several nightclubs (which helped supplement the family income at the time). Discovered by a talent scout in a 1934 Fashion Show, within a year she found herself in California signed under contract to Warner Bros. appearing in several musical shorts and full-length features; some of which included The Magic of Music (1935), Love on Toast (1937), Swing, Sister, Swing (1938), and The Spirit of Culver (1939). Being promoted as the studios female equivalent to MGM’s Mickey Rooney, she often portrayed a vast array of girlfriends, starlets, best friends, and love interests all too natural realism. She co-starred with such legends as Pat O’Brien, Stella Adler, John Payne, Marie Wilson, Pat O’Brien, Isabel Jewel, Grant Richards, Fritz Feld, Jerry Colonna, and Ronald Reagan. During World War II, she worked extensively with the USO and Red Cross entertaining and servicing where the need was great both in America and overseas. In 1947, she retired from film making following her appearance in That Hagan Girl and spent the 4 decades teaching musical at universities and colleges throughout California along with performing in live theatre. Some of her stage credits include appearances in such productions as: The Philadelphia Story, Dinner at Eight, Private Lives, Mourning Becomes Electra, Blithe Spirit, Her Cardboard Lover, Dark Victory, A Christmas Carol, It Happens Every Spring, My Sister Eileen, A Streetcar Named Desire, Happy Anniversary, and The Children’s Hour. After retiring in 1989, she than turned her focus onto painting, charity work with St. Jude’s, and living everyday of her life to the fullest until her passing at 100 years young. She is survived by 2 siblings and several nieces and nephews.
